Isn't this beautiful? £2 from Oxfam yesterday. approx A5, deep red linen covered hardback. Heavy, embossed, metallic teal block lettering in Gill Sans. It's wonderful. The star Glyph sets the whole thing off perfectly. someone loved this, took their time to lay it out properly on a machine. Fitted the letters into a quoin and tightened the frame by hand. The spacing is perfect, slightly more at the baseline to optically adjust the way your eye balances, and the two base points of the star rest on the diagonals that bisect the cover - rather than point center, which would have looked wrong - because the eye always pulls things down slightly. Whoever chose the colours was a genius - you would never think of it now. It's black and white plates only - which technically renders it as having no commercial value, but I think it's priceless.
I appear to have a bad cold. I knew as soon as I got up something was wrong. I had a sore mouth. Whenever I'm ill all my salivary glands dry up - must be something to do with the lymphatic system or something. my face is really hot and sore, I think it's a bit swollen. All my synases feel like they have been stripped out and replaced with copper wire and my head is throbbing. I don't feel that rough yet but I know it's coming. I occurred to me that I can do something tomorrow that I've never done in my life........ I can call in sick. I'm not actually being paid tomorrow because I manage my own time, but I was going in for some meetings. Now I can do what the rest of you do.
It's a shame I feel rough because it's been a lovely day - I took the dogs to the beach for a couple of hours this morning so they are happy and sleepy - there is sand everywhere... but never mind, I've already been round with the hoover once. I had loads to do today but I've gone off the idea. I'm trying to decide which is right... feed a fever / starve a cold, or the other way round?

I come across books like this every day that are minor works of art, but remain utterly worthless. It's a complete lottery.
At least we have the blogosphere to promote the things that we think are unjustly neglected.
