.. well, nearly - it should start pissing down later today. Cooler and overcast, lovely. I tried walking the dogs, but Alfie was too clever for me and would only go as far as Fairlight before he insisted on a return to the safety of the house. He has a horror of thunder, so perhaps he's sensitive to something in the atmosphere. As I have quite a bit to do today, the rain will be most welcome - I can just 'get on' with everything.
Had several very bad dreams including being eaten by sharks and chased by blue monsters. I have never taken drugs, probably just as well.
Very odd rash of articles in all the papers about Faye Dunnway - for some reason - this is world news. She has a house in LA - which has been described as 'nice' but modest by LA standards ( looks like a bloody palace to me ) and an apartment in Manhatten - which she has had for many years, that is 'rent controlled' - her landlord is claimimg in court that as she is based in LA - she should lose her rent controlled status or face eviction - it would also seem that her son is living in the appartment, and subletting is not allowed.
The general gist of all the articles is that she is, shock horror, not living in vulgar grandeur and must be on her uppers - the Telegraph even have a slideshow of pictures through the ages, as if she had died. Only the Guardian points out that - even in her 70's, she has never bee out of work and is a very busy actress - and that she lives alone and has no need for a mansion.
It's irritating that success must be quantified by the way you live - and that failure to flaunt your wealth must be seen as evidence of something darker. On the radio it just stated that half of all adults have a smart phone ( I'm in the wrong half ) and many claim to be 'addicted' to it. I honestly can't justify the cost - nor Sky - nor a car - last month I seriously wondered if I should cancel my monthly charity standing orders ( I didn't ).
I thought all that vulgar loadsamoney attitude died in the 90's - but it seems not. There is a series with the financial expert and art collector Alvin Hall on the radio at the moment where he interviews young people about their financial aspirations. He spoke to a group of 20 somethings about finding work and standing on their own two feet and asked if there were any questions - only one, a girl asked "like - how did you get to be so, like famous"

I found myself having to waste time between appointments today, so walked around a retail park (hell). I could not believe the prices of clothes. £30 for a cropped, 'wool mix' jumper which would crumble after one wash. People were waltzing around head to toe in new clothes and coordinating costume jewellery. One unfortunate looking lady said to her friend "I've spent over £200, not bad tho' when you think of all the bags I just chucked in the boot". I felt like someone the world had left behind for a moment.
tell me about it - I actually had quite a bit of money in the bank yesterday and wandered into town - I made a beeline for the pound shop and found myself habitually comparing the weights of the different brands of toothpase to see which felt heavier, and was therefore more value, and on the way home I bought a loaf of uncut ( and rather tasty ) wholemeal bread for 30p, the local 'posh' baker sells rye bread of the same size for £4.50 per loaf. They can't bake enough.....
