Sunday

Didn't wake up until 7.30am, recovering from a particularly brutal game of scrabble last night - which I won, but with no real triumph, most interesting word was 'Bias'......  but at least I managed to get rid of my X.

The news is all Norway and Winehouse.  One is considerably more important than the other. I was pretty annoyed that within half an hour the online mood had turned from shock to veneration,  people are on the radio talking rubbish and making her into a martyr. She was talented - for sure, but she was a bloody mess and nobody's hero. Some girl just said 'she was the voice of my generation - the place she sang from was pain'... hardly... In one paper it noted that people were gathering outside her house, and building a tribute to her at her favourite pub. Which is appropriate.. it's probably full of the freeloaders, hanger-oners and sycophants that filled her life. The newspapers are an unremitting swamp of praise and tribute - which is pretty rich, last month they were all united in ridiculing her concert appearances and took great pleasure in mocking her and speculating on her fate. I don't suppose anyone was required to edit her obituary - it must have been in the in-tray for some time. Waste really pisses me off.

One big piece of work to do today, a few errands to run. Spent all of yesterday developing the logo for the Hastings are Olympic coverage  which I quite enjoyed and have to have approved by Wednesday - and I'm working in Brighton tomorrow.

It's actually a pretty lovely day so for. I had dinner on The Tackleway last night - so I've had a proper weekend of sorts.

Winehouse the 'voice of a generation'? More like a very talented novelty act - a North London Jewish girl who sang like a black American soul singer from the 1960s. A fantastic voice, housed in the body of a frail, fucked-up young woman who couldn't cope with success.

The fatuous tweets from celebrities ("U R in heaven now..." etc) are nauseating.
