More woes

The accident outside yesterday was sadly fatal:

A 78-year-old woman has died in hospital after the car she was travelling in hit a wall in Sussex. The woman suffered fatal injuries when a VW Polo being driven by an 81-year-old man crashed in Canute Road, Hastings. Sussex Police said she was taken to the Conquest Hospital for treatment but died later. The force has appealed for any witnesses to the crash, which happened at about 1130 BST on Saturday. The 81-year-old driver was also taken to hospital but the extent of his injuries is not known.

The wall in question belonged to the big white modernist house - and has hardly a scratch on it, although the car was totaled.

Every weekday I drive through Worthing - one of the great retirement hotspots - and find myself stuck behind elderly 'motorists' who weave around the road at 26mph. They're clearly incapable of driving safely, but because they're within the speed limit isn't regarded as a problem. It's madness.

I watch them drive, they crouch over the wheel - squinting through bottle bottom glasses and grit their teeth - in anticipation of the inevitable impact - usually in a natty cap and quilted gillet... madness.
