Is that what we are supposed to call it??? I hated 'Naughties' - One mate has referred to this year as 'Elevenses' - which is just about right.
Had a low key day yesterday. Ran over to the Masonic to help with the clean up - this is after cycling all the way down the hill and getting a puncture on The Stade - then having to haul the bike all the way back up again - I hope that's not a Sisyphean omen for this year.
Xmas must be over because the telly is crap again. Apparently there will be earth shattering events in tonight's Archers - I'm hoping for a dirty bomb in the cow shed - or one of the key Characters decides to pop over to Dignitas because she just can't take any more.
The news is dull - except the development that the scary landlord in Bristol has been released. This generally means that the police don't have any actual physical evidence to connect him to the crime - meaning he's either innocent or just lucky. I have no opinion about either - but what does interest me is the press perspective ( cos, like - I work in the meeja a bit - innit ) - they have already been warned by the Atourney General over the tone of their speculative coverage. By the end of the day we shall have the full spectrum of headlines 'how he got away with it' - 'did the boyfriend do it after all' 'was it santa??" etc. Jefferies may or may not be a murderer - but he's also a bit 'odd' - or should that be 'ideosyncratic' - rather like myself ( go on - it's what you are all thinking) - God forbid I should ever come under scrutiny for anything sinister ( "I've seen him answer the door in pyjamas where the tops don't match the bottoms and they clash - spots and stripes HORRIBLE - must be a murdered!!)". I've mentioned on here before that I was detained by the police briefly about 8 years ago because I matched the description of a rapist - my life flashed before my eyes...
Xmas went really quickly this year and was quite enjoyable. I drank almost nothing - which was a good thing, as I had a clear head all the way through - no hangovers and a good time was had by all. It also saved money - which will be a major feature of 2011.... again. I start the year solvent - as in - I have no debts, no credit cards and only a small overdraft - I always pay my bills and my mortgage and I have a salary which covers my basic living expenses. Alas I still owe the Inland Revenue about 4.5k - which is not actually that much for someone in my position - being freelance puts you right at the bottom of the food chain and it's a very hard place to be. Touching wood... I have enough freelance work to keep me going to Easter and possibly beyond - but I need to earn more money this year to get the revenue to go away, and there is very little out there that I can fit around my existing commitments.
Despite that - I start this year in a fairly good frame of mind, rather more so that usual. With my newly fixed teeth - better physical shape that I was in when I was 20 and plenty to occupy my mind. I'm still single - which is a fucking bore, the house still needs a fortune spent on it, which is grim and everything in the garden froze to death - but nothing that can't be fixed. I get out more than I used to - and I like people more than I used to, but only just. I'm starting to feel a bit more ambitious too - which is something I lost sight of years ago, and could probably do with getting back.
I'm on a Wordpress course later this moth so I may change the way that Grey Area works a bit - much to my astonishment I get about 5500 hits per month, amazing how much patience some people have - ploughing their way through my dyslexia - not all of them are by me. I'm quite popular in Australia, for some reason - with 'overheard in Hastings' being one of my biggest hitters - so I'll start the year as I mean to go on -
Overheard in Hastings 4am, New Years Day
I'm on my way home along Norman Road - very drunk bloke - quite ordinary; looking talking at, but not into - his mobile phone:"
"You've done it now - I'm going to do murder now, murder, and it's all your fault, fucking murder, I said murder..
(Spots me )
. ..OI! - fucking baldy - I'm going to do murder, I am - fucking murder - they've pushed me too far this time, and I'm starting now"
I make my exit, but along the road by Clampers I saw another man dressed in smart clothes, white shirt and waistcoat - covered in blood - stumbling around blank eyed and making a low moaning sound - I swear he was The Undead - IT'S STARTED ALREADY, THE DEAD WALK THE EARTH!!!!!!

Have been reading and enjoying your blog for over a year now - my mother lives in Hastings and I came across your blog as an adjunct or link to something about what the weather was doing. Now I can advance her and my knowledge of exciting developments - TK Maxx, the weather just up the road from her -she lives lower down London Road and even the New Year Eve's party which her other daughter is attending. Do hope 2011 goes better than expected for you...
Ah - thanks for that! - I hope a good time was had at the Party. Personally - I'd quite to live lower down myself - this hill may be doing wonders for my calf muscles... but sometimes I'd love to be able to cycle home in one go.
- ah, I've just checked out your work - it's great! - I nearly bough a house in Whitby once, the prints there and Robin Hoods bay are lovely - I think that Bricks and Slate is my favourite.

Thank you for that - I'm just off to Robin Hoods Bay today, do love Whitby as well - in some ways Hastings has some similarities with the twittens the equivalents of the yards. Best wishes
