They have just been given a publishing brief - I gave them a list of books to research over the half term break - they have to select one and put together a publishing package including research, sales pitch, cover design and ebook formatting. One of my students was staring at her iPhone,
"Oh - I've already downloaded the one I want to do and I'm reading it now"
"what... how can you read a book on that tiny screen"
"oh - it's great - it saves you having to waste all that time carrying about a book thingy".
I could have cried.
The books I chose are all based around the context of mid century apocalypse / world end type themes - 'On The Beach' - 'I am Legend' 'The Drowned World' etc.. They have to understand what these books mean and why they were written - two are by my favourite author - John Christopher, 'A World In Winter' and 'No Blade of Grass'.
"oh.. he's my boyfriends grandad' said one of them.... I didn't plan that.
Another of my students is on a casting agencies books as an extra. Next month she starts work on the big screen version of 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' - she'd never heard of it before and couldn't understand why I was so excited.... she's playing a clerk and is going for costume fitting this week - she's going to be on the whole 90 day shoot.

Pearls before swine.....
yeah, his name is Ben and he works for Christie's in London.
I set a summer project and put JC on the reading list and apparently he read the brief and approved!!! She said that he will see this one as well, I'm chuffed - apparently he's lovely.
