The end.

I saw early this morning that all the swifts around Barn Pond are gathering on the telephone cable and feeding frenzy the midges... getting ready for the next step of their long migration, lovely to watch - there were dozens of them - but sad, summer.... for what it's worth... is over. They have always been my favourite birds - very aerodynamic.

Rest assured they weren't swifts. Swifts arrive in April and leave mid-August. You may see a rogue one or two swifts at this time of year (a late-brood youngster) but would be unusual. Swifts NEVER land on wires EVER. They are physically incapable of horizontal perching. The order of return to Africa is 1) Swifts 2) Sand Martins 3) House Martins 4) Swallows. You would have seen House Martins with some Swallows and late Sand Martins mixed in.

yep... ok... but you had to be there.

I knew they were not swallows because of the tails - so various House and Sand Martins.

I stand corrected.
