After a couple of rocky days when I've had to deal a print problem and an hysterical client, I'm pretty much done in.
Historicaly my industry was very structured and heirarchical - artists drew, designers designed, artworkers artworked, repro men ( for it were ) did the repro - and printers printed. Now - thanks to computers and the internet, Clients just make vague gestures and demands, printers press buttons and designers do everything else and take all the crap
The value of work has been reduced so much that there is no budget for anything other than a quick concept - wizzing a few emails about and arranging to have the work delivered. used to spend hours with printers talking through work - taking samples to and from the client, getting approvals for small changes. Clients now think they can make constant changes - even after you have started printing, order in units of one and assume you are telepathic. Printers are so stretched they have to offer minute prices to compete meaning all the love and care they used to put into work has gone.
I'm left in the middle falling out with everyone. Hence waking up this morning with a massive headache and blurred vision after a really bad nights sleep - 3rd one on in row. I actually have a couple of really nice jobs on at the moment - but I can't enjoy them - I'll have a crack at them this morning after the dog walk - usually cheers me up.
