"I own the sky"

Reading an article this morning about the legal dispute between communications company Skype and Murdock's BskyB. For some time BskyB have been in contention that they 'own' the word 'sky' apparently in all contexts - which is nice for them.

The moniker 'Skype' is a derivation - a mashed up word put together by marketing people to reference 'blue sky thinking' - 'hype' and 'peer-to-peer'. It was meant to work with speech to make it memorable - a bit like 'Murdock' and 'cock'

Oddly enough a few years ago working on a pitch for one of our bigger supermarkets we used the 'sky' concept and the colour blue ( which they already 'owned') and the concept 'what's the biggest thing you can think of' - obviously Murdock owns it so that would have got us into trouble.

I never once identified Skype with BskyB until this story - although of course now I always shall, which might just have been the point.
