Friday

I had an appointment in town but they canceled by text when I was already on the way - but it was a nice morning so I had a wander around. I picked up an Argos catalogue, it was about 12 inches thick and I now have a sore shoulder from carrying it home. There was nothing in the shops I actually wanted but it was a bit of fresh air.

I went into Holland and Barrett - I wanted to get some cod liver oil (it does work, you know!) and I had a good look around the store. I was the only person in there and both assistants watched me like hawks, asking me several times if I was OK. The staff in H&B always look really unhealthy and are quite surly. Eventually I went to the till and the girl gave me a really snooty look, when she took my card off me the hand held device didn't work - this had nothing to do with me but she reacted as if I had held her up with a gun, eventually after about 3 attempts the machine worked and she gave me my card back - leaving my purchases on the counter and put her hands in her pockets and shrugged at me, no attempt to offer me a bag - paid for or not. She kept giving me evils as I struggled to get everything into my shoulder bag until an aged woman who was buying an energy drink came to the till " Hello madam, everything alright, would you like a bag for that" she breezed, nice as pie all of a sudden.

I hate rude shop people - in Brighton last week I was struck by how friendly and upbeat all the shop staff were - I know they are all probably post grad students and have had to fight for even the most menial paid work - but there is no excuse for bad manners.

That's true about Brighton. I've just employed some postgrads and they're being paid £5.80 an hour (not my choice). I apologised, but promised that they could commute after 9.00 (when the rail fares became cheaper) and assured them that I'd never fuck with their heads.
